What should you know about Tylenol for fever?

Tylenol is a brand of acetaminophen, also called paracetamol. It may make someone more comfortable while the body responds to an illness. A lower temperature does not by itself show that the underlying cause has gone away.

Fever is a raised body temperature that can occur with infections and other conditions. Acetaminophen works in the brain to reduce fever and relieve pain. It is not an antibiotic, antiviral treatment, or cure for a cold, flu, or other infection.

Fever may return when the medicine wears off because the cause is still present. Fluids, rest, light clothing, and a comfortable room can support recovery. Avoid using fever medicine only to chase a number if the person is otherwise comfortable; comfort, alertness, drinking, and breathing also matter.

Follow the product label or the dosing instructions from a clinician, and use the measuring device supplied with a liquid product. Doses for children depend on the child’s age and weight, so do not estimate a child’s dose with a household spoon.

Check every cold, flu, or pain product for acetaminophen or paracetamol before giving it. Combining products with the same ingredient can cause an overdose. Ask a pharmacist or clinician before use if the person has liver disease, drinks heavily, takes several medicines, or has had an allergic reaction to acetaminophen. Do not give a child or infant a product labelled for adults.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, blue or grey lips, a seizure, severe confusion, unusual difficulty waking, a stiff neck, or a rapidly spreading rash. Get prompt medical advice if the person cannot keep fluids down, has signs of dehydration, or is getting markedly worse.

A young infant with a fever needs prompt medical assessment, even if the child seems fairly well. Contact a clinician when fever persists, keeps returning, or occurs in someone who is pregnant, immunocompromised, or living with a serious long-term condition. Do not rely on Tylenol to delay assessment when warning signs are present.

Ask which product and dose fit the person’s age, weight, health conditions, and other medicines. You can also ask how long it is reasonable to use it, what symptoms should trigger an examination, and whether another medicine already contains acetaminophen or paracetamol.
