What should you know about twice exceptional ADHD?

Short answer
Twice exceptional ADHD describes a person with notable strengths or high ability alongside ADHD-related difficulties that still deserve support.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Twice exceptional
- Strengths and a neurodevelopmental difficulty can coexist
- Assessment
- Looks at development, functioning and other explanations
Understanding the combination
A person may learn quickly, think creatively or perform strongly in an area while also struggling with attention, organisation, impulsivity or time management. Ability can hide difficulty when tasks are interesting, familiar or urgent; it does not rule out ADHD. The mismatch may become clearer when demands increase. Feeling anxious, irritability and difficulty concentrating can also arise from stress, sleep problems or another condition, so they should not be treated as proof of ADHD.
Useful next steps
Write down examples across settings, such as missed instructions, unfinished tasks, intense focus on preferred activities and the supports that help. Include childhood patterns where possible and ask school or workplace supporters for observations. A mental health assessment can consider development, mood, sleep, learning differences and everyday functioning. Support may include practical routines, reduced distractions, clear written instructions, coaching and treatment discussed with a qualified clinician.
When to seek prompt help
Arrange professional help when attention or impulsivity is affecting safety, education, work, relationships or basic routines. Seek urgent support if distress includes thoughts of self-harm, inability to stay safe, severe agitation or a sudden major change in behaviour. High ability does not make significant impairment less deserving of care.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which experiences suggest ADHD rather than stress or another condition, how strengths and difficulties will both be assessed, and which accommodations or treatment options fit your goals.
