What should you know about tunel immunohistochemistry?

A tissue section is treated so DNA breaks can be given a visible or detectable label. The pathologist then examines the labelled areas in relation to cell shape, tissue structure, and other stains. Location matters: signal in tumour cells may mean something different from signal in surrounding inflammatory or damaged tissue.

TUNEL signal is commonly used as an indicator of DNA fragmentation, which can occur during programmed cell death and other forms of cell injury. It is not a stand-alone diagnosis, and staining intensity can be affected by sample quality, processing, and laboratory controls.

Ask whether the test will use tissue already obtained through biopsy or surgery. You may not need a new procedure for the stain itself. Ask what the report is measuring, whether comparison with another stain is planned, and whether the result is being used for diagnosis, research, or treatment assessment.

The report may describe the distribution of positive cells rather than give a simple yes-or-no answer. Your clinician will combine it with the pathology diagnosis, imaging, examination, and treatment history before discussing its meaning.

The stain is performed on collected tissue, so it does not cause symptoms by itself. If you recently had a biopsy, contact your care team for increasing pain, redness, swelling, fever, discharge, or bleeding. Emergency help is appropriate for uncontrolled bleeding, severe weakness, or breathing difficulty.
