Tuberculous Osteomyelitis Symptoms

Tuberculosis can reach bone and cause inflammation that progresses slowly. The affected area may be tender, swollen, warm, or difficult to move, although the skin may not look dramatically inflamed. The spine, hip, and knee are possible sites; spinal involvement can cause back pain, nerve symptoms, or difficulty walking. General symptoms can include tiredness, reduced appetite, night sweats, or fever, but their absence does not rule out infection. Similar symptoms have many other causes, so testing is needed.

Arrange prompt medical assessment for persistent bone or joint pain with swelling, reduced movement, or tuberculosis exposure. Tell the clinician about previous tuberculosis, close contact with someone who has it, travel or residence in areas where it is common, immune problems, and any lung symptoms. Assessment may include examination, imaging, and laboratory or tissue testing. Follow prescribed treatment carefully; do not self-treat with leftover antibiotics. Bone Grafting may be discussed in selected cases when infection has damaged bone, but infection control comes first.

Seek urgent care for new limb weakness, numbness, loss of bladder or bowel control, severe back pain with walking difficulty, confusion, breathing difficulty, or a rapidly enlarging swollen area. If you have fever with marked illness or cannot bear weight, arrange immediate assessment. Cover a draining wound and avoid sharing personal items until a clinician advises you about infection precautions.

Ask which tests can distinguish tuberculous osteomyelitis from other bone infections, whether samples are needed before treatment, which parts of the body should be checked, and how treatment will be monitored. Ask what activity and weight-bearing limits are appropriate while the bone heals.
