What should you know about trophozoite malaria?

After malaria parasites enter the bloodstream, they develop inside red blood cells. The trophozoite stage grows and uses the cell before later stages continue the parasite cycle. A laboratory may identify these forms on a blood film or with another malaria test.

Malaria can cause fever, chills, sweating, headache, weakness and muscle aches. Symptoms may come and go, and illness can worsen quickly. Recent travel or residence in an area where malaria occurs is an essential part of the assessment.

If fever follows travel to a malaria-risk area, seek same-day medical assessment and mention every destination and travel date. A blood test may need repeating because parasite levels can change. Take prescribed antimalarial treatment exactly as directed and do not share it.
