Trochanteric bursitis: patient information

Short answer
Trochanteric bursitis causes tenderness around the outer hip and often improves with pressure relief, graded activity, and targeted rehabilitation.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Where it hurts
- The outside of the hip, often over the greater trochanter.
- Sleep tip
- Avoid direct pressure and try a pillow between the knees.
- Recovery focus
- Build tolerance gradually with suitable movement and strengthening.
What is happening at the hip
A bursa cushions movement near the bony outer hip. Irritation there can produce aching or sharp pain when you lie on that side, walk for a long time, climb stairs, or stand on one leg. Similar symptoms may come from the gluteal tendons or from the hip, back, or nearby nerves, so a healthcare professional uses your story and examination rather than one symptom alone. The condition may also be called greater trochanteric pain syndrome or lateral hip pain.
More general information about hip symptoms is available on the Hip Pain page.
Day-to-day care
Protect the sore side from direct pressure, including by changing sleep position or placing a pillow between your knees. Keep moving at a level that does not produce a lasting flare, and temporarily shorten walks or avoid steep slopes if they provoke pain. Gentle, progressive strengthening can improve the hip's ability to manage daily loads. Physiotherapy may help you select exercises and adjust your walking, work, or sport routine. When symptoms remain troublesome, discuss Shockwave Therapy or a Cortisone Injection with a clinician.
When to get help
Arrange a review if pain is limiting sleep, work, walking, or exercise, or if it has not improved after changing the aggravating activity. Seek urgent care for severe pain after a fall, inability to walk or bear weight, fever, or a swollen, hot, red area. New numbness or substantial weakness should also be assessed promptly.
Questions worth asking
Ask whether your symptoms fit bursal irritation, tendon pain, or another source; which activities to modify; and how to progress exercises. Ask what improvement to look for, when you should return, and which warning signs need earlier care.

Questions people ask
Can trochanteric bursitis affect sleep?
Yes. Pressure from lying on the painful side can aggravate symptoms, so changing position may help.
When should I see a clinician?
Arrange a review when symptoms limit daily life or persist; seek prompt care for fever, severe injury pain, inability to bear weight, or a hot red area.
