What should you know about trigger point therapy massage?

Short answer
Trigger point therapy massage applies focused pressure to tender, tight areas in a muscle to reduce local tension and help movement.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Technique
- Focused massage or pressure on a tender muscle area
- Main aim
- Ease muscle tension and support comfortable movement
- Tell the practitioner
- About injuries, surgery, numbness, skin problems, and medicines
What trigger point therapy means
A trigger point is a sensitive spot within a tense band of muscle. Pressing it can reproduce pain in the spot or sometimes in a nearby area. During treatment, a physiotherapist or trained practitioner assesses the muscle, uses gradual pressure or massage, and checks how your symptoms and range of movement respond. The aim is to calm muscle guarding and make movement easier; it is not a way to diagnose every cause of pain.
The approach may be considered when muscle tightness contributes to neck, shoulder, back, hip, or limb discomfort, including symptoms associated with myofascial pain syndrome. It should be adapted if you have an injury, nerve symptoms, a bleeding tendency, or a condition affecting the skin or tissues.
What you can do
Choose a practitioner who will ask about your health, examine the painful area, and explain the technique before starting. Tell them where the pain travels, what movements worsen it, and whether you have had surgery or take medicines that affect bleeding. Pressure may feel intense, but it should remain tolerable; speak up if it becomes sharp, burning, or difficult to bear.
After treatment, gentle movement and ordinary hydration can support comfort. Mild tenderness may occur for a short time. Avoid forceful self-massage over a fresh injury, numb area, swollen joint, or broken skin. Dry needling is a separate technique that uses a fine needle rather than massage pressure.
When to seek care
Arrange a clinical assessment if pain is new, persistent, worsening, or limiting sleep, work, or normal movement. Seek urgent help for severe pain after an accident, a visibly deformed limb, sudden weakness, loss of sensation, or a limb that becomes cold or changes colour. Fever, spreading redness, marked swelling, or feeling acutely unwell also needs prompt medical attention.
Questions for your doctor or physiotherapist
Ask: Could another condition be causing this pain? What findings make trigger point therapy reasonable for me? How will we judge whether it is helping? Which movements or exercises should accompany treatment? Should I avoid massage because of my medicines, skin, nerves, or recent injury?

Questions people ask
Is trigger point therapy massage the same as a general massage?
No. It focuses on specific tender or tight muscle areas and is guided by an assessment of your symptoms and movement.
Can trigger point therapy massage diagnose the cause of pain?
No. It may identify a muscular contributor, but persistent or unusual symptoms still need an appropriate clinical assessment.
