What to know about tree and bud nodules

A nodule is a solid, raised lump that can sit in the skin or deeper tissue. A clustered or branching appearance may be a visual description rather than the name of one condition. Possible explanations include an inflamed boil, a blocked or irritated structure, a benign growth, or less commonly a skin cancer such as basal cell carcinoma. Appearance alone cannot distinguish these causes. A clinician may ask when it began, whether it changes, and whether it bleeds or crusts.

Do not squeeze, cut, burn, or repeatedly scratch a nodule. Photograph it beside a familiar object and note changes in size, colour, tenderness, crusting, or drainage. Arrange a skin assessment, particularly if the lump persists or keeps returning. Depending on the examination, care may involve observation, treatment for inflammation or infection, a steroid injection into the skin, or sampling and removal for a definite diagnosis.

Book a prompt appointment for a lump that grows, feels fixed or firm, repeatedly crusts, bleeds, becomes painful, or fails to heal. Seek urgent help for rapidly spreading redness, fever, severe pain, or swelling near the eye or airway. These features guide urgency; they do not by themselves identify the cause.

Ask whether the lump is in the skin or underneath it, what changes would be concerning, whether it could be a boil or another growth, and whether a biopsy or other test is needed. Ask how to protect the area while you wait.
