Transabdominal cerclage side effects: what to know

A transabdominal cerclage places a strong band around the upper part of the cervix through an abdominal operation. It may be considered when a vaginal stitch is unsuitable or has not provided enough support. Expected recovery effects can include abdominal soreness, tiredness, bruising, and changes in bowel activity from surgery. The stitch generally remains in place, so birth planning normally involves a caesarean birth. Your maternity team will explain how this applies to your pregnancy.

Take medicines exactly as prescribed, keep the wound clean and dry as instructed, and increase activity gradually. Attend postoperative and antenatal appointments even if recovery feels straightforward. Report increasing wound redness, discharge, fever, worsening pain, vomiting, difficulty passing urine, or a swollen painful leg. During pregnancy, follow the team’s plan for scans and contact details; do not wait for a routine appointment if concerning symptoms appear.

Seek urgent maternity assessment for vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, regular tightening or contractions, severe abdominal pain, fever, or reduced fetal movement once movements are established. Sudden breathlessness, chest pain, or one-sided leg swelling also needs emergency care. These signs do not prove preterm labour, but they require examination to protect you and the pregnancy.

Ask how the stitch changes birth planning, which activities are suitable during recovery, and who to call at any hour. Discuss wound care, pain relief, scan timing, warning signs, and whether your previous pregnancy history affects monitoring.
