Short answer

Training DOMS is delayed muscle soreness after exercise that usually settles with time, gentle movement, and sensible recovery.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Typical pattern
Soreness develops after training rather than from one sudden event.
Helpful approach
Gentle movement and a gradual return to exercise.

What training DOMS means

DOMS often appears later rather than during a workout, especially after a new routine, heavier resistance, downhill running, or exercises with a lengthening muscle action. Muscles may feel tender, stiff, weak, or uncomfortable when you climb stairs or use the area. This pattern differs from a sudden sharp pain, a pop, or pain that began with one specific movement, which can fit a muscle strain instead.

How to support recovery

Pause the exercise that provokes pain, but keep comfortable daily movement if you can. Easy walking, gentle range-of-motion work, adequate fluids, sleep, and regular meals can support recovery. Heat may ease stiffness, while a cool pack wrapped in cloth may feel better after activity; use either for a short period and protect your skin. A sports massage may help some people feel less tight, but it should not be forceful over very sore tissue. Gradually return to training when ordinary movement is comfortable, reducing load and intensity at first.

When to seek care

Arrange medical assessment for severe or worsening pain, marked swelling, unusual weakness, numbness, inability to use the limb, dark urine, fever, or pain after a significant injury. Seek urgent help if you cannot move the limb normally or feel seriously unwell. If soreness keeps returning with ordinary training or does not improve as expected, a clinician or physiotherapist can review technique, workload, and other causes.

Questions for your doctor

Could this be DOMS or a muscle strain? Which activities should I pause? When can I resume resistance training? Would physiotherapy, heat, cold, or massage suit my symptoms?

Questions people ask

Can you train with DOMS?

Light movement may be comfortable, but avoid hard work for the painful muscle until strength and normal movement return.

How is DOMS different from a strain?

DOMS is often widespread and delayed; a strain more often causes sudden, localised pain during a particular movement.
