Toxic Shock Syndrome Explained

Toxic shock syndrome, often called TSS, is a whole-body reaction to toxins made by some strains of Staphylococcus or Streptococcus bacteria. It can arise from an infected wound, surgery, childbirth, or vaginal products, including tampons and menstrual cups. The bacteria do not need to be growing throughout the bloodstream for the toxin response to become severe. Typical features include sudden fever, low blood pressure, vomiting or diarrhoea, muscle aches, headache, a widespread red rash, and later peeling skin. Several illnesses can look similar, so assessment is essential.

If TSS is suspected, seek emergency assessment and explain any recent procedure, wound, childbirth, infection, or menstrual-product use. Remove a tampon or cup if present. Hospital treatment may include intravenous antibiotics and fluids, close monitoring, source control such as cleaning or draining an infected area, and support for organs affected by the illness. Do not self-treat with leftover antibiotics or wait for a rash before getting help.

Get emergency help immediately for fever with fainting, confusion, severe weakness, breathing difficulty, a rapidly spreading rash, repeated vomiting, or very little urine. A person can become seriously unwell quickly, so these symptoms need attention even when the possible source seems small or the skin looks normal.

Ask what source may have triggered the illness, which tests are being used, how organ function is being watched, and what treatment is planned. Before leaving hospital, ask about warning symptoms, wound care, follow-up, and when menstrual products can be used again.
