What should you know about torn chest muscle?

Short answer
A torn chest muscle can cause sudden chest-wall pain, weakness with pushing, swelling or bruising, and difficulty using the arm; protect it and arrange a clinical assessment.

What a chest muscle tear can mean
The pectoral muscles help bring the arm across the body and support pushing movements. A forceful lift, bench press, fall or sudden stretch can injure muscle fibres or their tendon. Pain may be felt across the chest or near the upper arm, and a visible hollow, change in muscle shape or marked bruising can suggest a more substantial injury. Chest-wall pain after exertion can also come from other tissues, so do not assume every chest symptom is a muscle tear.
What to do now
Stop the movement that triggered pain and keep the arm in a comfortable position. Use a wrapped cold pack for short periods during the early phase, and avoid massage, stretching, heavy lifting and repeated testing of strength. A clinician can examine shoulder and chest movement and decide whether imaging or referral is appropriate. As pain settles, rehabilitation may restore range of motion before gradual strengthening.
When to seek care
Seek urgent help for chest pressure, breathlessness, fainting, sweating, pain spreading to the jaw or arm, or symptoms unrelated to movement. Arrange prompt assessment for a pop at injury, rapidly increasing swelling, extensive bruising, a change in chest contour, severe weakness, numbness, or inability to raise the arm. These signs need examination because a tendon injury, fracture or non-muscular cause may need different care.
Questions for your doctor
Which structure appears injured, and does it need imaging? When can I move the shoulder safely? Which exercises should begin first? What findings would make a surgical opinion useful? How will we judge readiness to return to lifting or sport?

Questions people ask
Can a chest muscle tear bruise?
Yes. Bleeding from injured fibres can produce bruising, swelling and tenderness, sometimes spreading toward the upper arm.
Should I exercise through the pain?
No. Stop painful loading initially; return through guided movement and progressive strengthening once the injury has been assessed.
