What should you know about top rated TENS units?

TENS stands for transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation. Small adhesive pads sit on the skin near, or sometimes around, a painful area. The controller adjusts the pattern and strength of the pulses. You should feel tingling, but the setting should remain comfortable rather than painful. TENS may make pain easier to tolerate during movement or rehabilitation, but it does not identify or correct the cause of pain. A device described as top rated is not automatically suitable for every person or every body region.

Read the device instructions and place electrodes only on intact skin. Check the pads and wires before use, start at a low setting, and stop if you develop burning, worsening pain, dizziness, or a rash. Do not place pads over the front of the neck, across the chest, on the head, or over broken or infected skin. Keep the unit away from water and avoid using it while driving or sleeping. Ask a clinician before use if you have a pacemaker or other implanted electrical device, reduced sensation, epilepsy, pregnancy, or an unexplained pain problem.

Arrange medical assessment for new severe pain, pain after a significant injury, weakness, numbness, loss of bladder or bowel control, fever, or a hot swollen joint. These features need evaluation rather than electrical stimulation. Stop using TENS and seek advice for persistent skin irritation or symptoms that repeatedly worsen with treatment.

Ask whether TENS fits the suspected cause of your pain, where the electrodes should go, how long each session should last, and what symptoms mean you should stop. Ask whether your medicines, implanted devices, skin condition, or planned physiotherapy change the advice.
