What should you know about a toothpaste rash around the mouth?

Toothpaste can leave ingredients on the skin around the lips, where flavourings, foaming agents, preservatives, or whitening ingredients may irritate or trigger contact dermatitis. Redness, dryness, scaling, burning, itching, or small bumps can follow. Atopic dermatitis, perioral-type irritation, heat rash, intertrigo, psoriasis, ringworm, scabies, or a drug rash may also be considered depending on the pattern. Note whether the rash is limited to areas touched by foam, whether the lips themselves are swollen, and whether symptoms began after a product change.

Rinse the skin around your mouth with lukewarm water after brushing and pat it dry. Avoid scrubbing, fragranced creams, exfoliants, and makeup on the irritated area. Consider discussing a simpler toothpaste with a pharmacist or clinician, and keep a record of the product name and ingredients. Do not apply strong steroid creams around the mouth without medical guidance. Use a bland protective moisturiser on surrounding skin if it does not sting, and avoid licking the area because saliva can worsen dryness.

Arrange an assessment if the rash persists after the suspected product is avoided, spreads, recurs, crusts, or affects the eyes. Seek urgent help for sudden lip, tongue, or throat swelling, breathing difficulty, dizziness, widespread hives, blistering, or skin peeling. Painful sores, pus, fever, or rapidly increasing redness also need prompt attention.

Ask whether the rash fits contact dermatitis, whether product avoidance or patch testing is appropriate, and what gentle cleanser or moisturiser to use. Bring the toothpaste packaging and mention mouthwash, lip products, medicines, and recent dental work.
