What should you know about too much compression after liposuction?

A garment that is excessively tight may leave deep marks, increase throbbing, make movement harder, or cause tingling and reduced sensation. Swelling can make a garment feel tighter later in the day. Pressure should be even rather than concentrated at an edge, seam, or opening. Do not assume that more pressure produces better contouring; the correct fit depends on the treated area, your swelling, and your surgeon’s instructions.

Follow the operating team’s schedule for wearing and removing the garment. If it feels uncomfortably tight, contact the surgical team before changing to a different size or adding extra padding. While waiting for advice, check that skin is warm and its usual colour, and avoid folding the garment into a narrow band. Keep walking gently as instructed, drink normally, and do not massage a painful or newly swollen area unless your clinician has advised it.

Seek urgent medical help for chest pain, sudden breathlessness, faintness, or a leg that becomes painful and swollen. Contact your surgeon promptly for rapidly increasing swelling, severe or escalating pain, new skin blistering, marked colour change, persistent numbness, fever, or drainage from an incision. These symptoms need assessment rather than a tighter garment.

Ask which level of compression and daily wearing schedule fits your treated area, how a properly fitted garment should feel, and what to do if swelling changes the fit. Confirm when you may shower, sleep without the garment, exercise, or switch styles.
