Tonsillitis without fever: what to know

A normal temperature does not rule out inflamed tonsils. Some people develop sore throat, enlarged tonsils, white patches, swollen neck glands, bad breath, or painful swallowing without fever. The reading can also be affected by the time of day, recent pain medicine, and how the temperature was measured. Fever is one clue among several, not a test for tonsillitis.

Viral infections and bacterial infections can both cause tonsil symptoms. Strep throat may present with throat pain and swollen glands, but a person’s symptoms cannot confirm the cause by themselves. A clinician can decide whether examination or testing is appropriate.

Keep drinking, rest your voice, and select foods that are easy to swallow. Gentle mouth care may reduce bad taste or coating. Follow the label for any pain-relief medicine and ask a pharmacist if you have another condition or take regular medicines. Avoid sharing drinks and do not take antibiotics unless prescribed for this illness.

Arrange a GP consultation if symptoms are not improving, keep recurring, or make eating and drinking difficult. Seek urgent help for breathing trouble, drooling, inability to swallow fluids, marked one-sided swelling, a muffled voice, or difficulty opening the mouth. New fever, earache, or rapidly worsening pain also warrants medical advice.
