Tonsillitis in children: what parents should know

Most children with tonsillitis have inflamed tonsils and may complain of throat pain, fever, bad breath, or pain when swallowing. Younger children may refuse food, drool, cry during meals, or seem unusually tired because they cannot describe the discomfort clearly. Earache can occur with throat inflammation. A viral illness is common, while Strep Throat is one bacterial possibility; symptoms alone cannot confirm the cause.

Offer regular sips of water or another suitable drink and soft, cool foods if tolerated. Let your child rest and keep track of urination, alertness, fever, and how much they can swallow. Ask a pharmacist or clinician about age-appropriate pain relief and follow the label or prescription instructions. Arrange a GP Consultation if symptoms are significant, do not improve, or keep returning. Antibiotic Treatment is used only when a clinician finds a likely bacterial reason.

Seek urgent help if your child struggles to breathe, cannot swallow saliva, is drooling continuously, has a muffled voice, cannot open the mouth normally, or is becoming difficult to wake. Prompt assessment is also needed when drinking falls sharply, urination becomes much less frequent, one side swells quickly, or fever accompanies a rapidly worsening throat. Do not wait for a routine appointment when these signs appear.

Ask whether your child needs a throat examination or test for Strep Throat, which fluids and pain relief are suitable, when they may return to school, and what symptoms should trigger same-day care. Tell the clinician about allergies, medicines, previous episodes, and any difficulty drinking.
