Tonsillitis from vaping: what to know

Vapour can leave the mouth and throat dry or irritated, which may cause burning, cough, or soreness. Tonsillitis is inflammation of the tonsils and is often linked with an infection, such as a viral illness or Strep Throat. Vaping may make an existing sore throat feel worse, but symptoms such as Fever, Swollen Glands, pus on the tonsils, or marked difficulty swallowing need assessment rather than an assumption about the cause. Earache may be referred from the throat.

Stop vaping while the throat is sore and avoid smoke or other inhaled irritants. Drink fluids regularly, rest, and select soft foods if swallowing hurts. Use suitable pain or fever medicine only according to its directions. Arrange a GP Consultation if symptoms persist, recur, or are interfering with drinking or sleep. Antibiotic Treatment is not a treatment for irritation and should be used only when a clinician considers a bacterial infection likely.

Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, inability to swallow saliva, a muffled voice, inability to open the mouth, or rapidly increasing throat swelling. Get prompt advice for chest symptoms after vaping, severe weakness, dehydration, worsening Fever, or one-sided throat pain. A clinician may need to distinguish throat irritation from infection or another airway problem.
