What should you know about tonsillitis but no tonsils?

After tonsillectomy, pain or redness in the throat may come from a viral infection, irritation, inflammation around the throat, or another condition such as Strep Throat. Small areas of tonsil tissue can rarely remain after surgery, but a clinician must assess what you are seeing rather than relying on a mirror. Swollen glands, Fever and Sore Throat can occur with several illnesses and do not prove that tonsillitis has returned.

Pain felt near the tonsil area can also be referred to the ear. Earache with severe one-sided throat pain, voice change or trouble opening the mouth deserves prompt assessment.

Sip water regularly, rest, and choose cool or soft foods if swallowing is uncomfortable. Use only pain relief that is suitable for your age, health conditions and current medicines; a pharmacist can help. Avoid smoking and other throat irritants. Arrange a GP Consultation if symptoms are not settling, recur often, or interfere with drinking. Do not restart leftover antibiotics without advice.

Seek urgent care for breathing difficulty, drooling or inability to swallow fluids, heavy bleeding after recent surgery, rapidly worsening swelling, confusion, or signs of dehydration. Seek same-day medical advice for severe one-sided pain, a muffled voice, inability to open the mouth normally, or a persistent Fever. These features can signal a complication that needs examination.

Ask which throat structure appears inflamed, whether testing for a bacterial infection is needed, and which pain-relief options fit your medical history. If surgery was recent, ask what wound changes are expected and which symptoms require direct review.
