What should you know about tonsillitis allergy symptoms?

Allergic rhinitis commonly causes sneezing, an itchy nose or eyes, watery discharge, and throat irritation from mucus draining backwards. Tonsillitis can present with red or swollen tonsils, a sore throat, pain when swallowing, swollen neck glands, and sometimes fever or earache. These patterns can overlap, especially when nasal mucus makes the throat uncomfortable.

Tonsillitis presenting with a sore throat does not mean that an allergy has caused an infection, and allergy symptoms alone do not establish tonsillitis. A clinician can inspect the tonsils, review the timing of symptoms, and consider Strep Throat or another infection when the illness is sudden or accompanied by fever.

For likely allergy symptoms, reduce exposure to the suspected trigger, rinse the nose with an appropriate saline product, and ask a pharmacist or clinician about suitable allergy treatment.
