What should you know about tongue tonsillitis?

Lingual tonsils sit near the base of the tongue and are not the same as the more visible tonsils at the sides of the throat. Inflammation may cause a deep sore throat, pain when swallowing, a foreign-body sensation, muffled speech, or discomfort that seems to reach the ears. Fever and swollen glands can occur. Viruses are common causes, while Strep Throat is one bacterial possibility; symptoms alone cannot reliably distinguish them. A clinician may inspect the mouth and throat and decide whether testing is needed.

Drink fluids, choose soft foods, and avoid smoke or other throat irritants. Rest your voice and use simple comfort measures recommended by a pharmacist or clinician.
