What should you know about tonal audiometry?

You usually wear headphones or insert earphones and respond whenever you hear a tone, even when it is very faint. The test compares air conduction, in which sound travels through the outer and middle ear, with bone conduction, in which vibrations reach the inner ear through the skull. The pattern helps an audiologist identify whether reduced hearing is more consistent with a blockage, a middle-ear problem, or an inner-ear or nerve pathway change. It can also show whether the two ears differ. A result is interpreted alongside your symptoms, examination, and communication needs; it is not a diagnosis by itself.

Bring hearing aids, previous hearing results, and a list of medicines or recent ear problems. Tell the clinician if you have ear pain, discharge, ringing, dizziness, or difficulty understanding speech. Avoid guessing during the test: respond only when you are confident that you heard a tone. The appointment is generally quiet and non-invasive, although you may need to repeat instructions or complete speech testing. Ask when and how your result will be explained, and whether an ear examination is needed before testing, especially if blockage is suspected.

Arrange prompt medical assessment for sudden hearing loss, especially in one ear, or hearing loss with severe dizziness, facial weakness, head injury, or fluid or blood from the ear. Seek care for persistent ear pain or discharge rather than relying on a hearing test alone. If gradual hearing change affects conversations, work, or safety, book an assessment. Causes can include earwax buildup or inner-ear conditions such as Meniere's Disease, so an examination may guide the next step.
