What should you know about tomato rash?

Tomato juice and plant material can irritate already sensitive skin, especially around the mouth or on areas that were rubbed. A rash limited to contact sites may fit contact dermatitis. Widespread itchy welts, facial swelling or symptoms after eating need prompt medical assessment because a food reaction can involve more than the skin.

Redness and itch can also occur with atopic dermatitis, heat rash, psoriasis, intertrigo, ringworm or scabies. The fact that a rash appeared after tomatoes does not by itself prove tomatoes caused it; timing, distribution, texture, recurrence and other exposures help distinguish possibilities.

Gently rinse exposed skin, stop using new products on the area and avoid scratching. Keep a note of whether exposure was from eating, touching the plant or using a sauce with other ingredients. Do not deliberately re-test a suspected food reaction without medical guidance. A clinician may inspect the rash and review medicines, cosmetics, laundry products and household contacts before recommending treatment.

Call emergency services for trouble breathing, throat tightness, faintness, or swelling of the lips, tongue or face after eating tomatoes. Seek prompt medical care for a rapidly spreading rash, blistering, skin peeling, fever, painful skin or involvement of the eyes or mouth. Arrange a routine review when the rash keeps returning, lasts despite removing the suspected trigger or develops pus.

Ask whether the appearance fits irritation, allergy, infection or an inflammatory condition, whether any testing is appropriate, and which ingredients or products should be avoided. Share photographs taken during a flare and a list of medicines and recent exposures.
