Toe Nails Lifting From the Nail Bed

The separated part may look white or yellow because air has entered beneath the nail. Repeated pressure from tight shoes, a knock, moisture, fungal infection and nail psoriasis can all contribute. The appearance alone cannot identify the cause.

A detached section usually stays separated until it grows forward and can be trimmed away. The nail bed can be vulnerable to debris and irritation while this happens, so a clean, dry environment matters.

Trim only the loose edge if it catches, using clean clippers, and file sharp corners gently. Keep the toe dry, choose roomy footwear, and cover it with a light dressing if shoes rub. Do not glue the nail down, dig beneath it, or tear attached nail.

A clinician can check for infection, inflammation or an injury pattern and decide whether testing is useful. Treatment targets the cause; nail surgery is reserved for selected problems rather than every lifted nail.

Seek care promptly if the toe becomes red, hot, swollen, increasingly painful, or produces pus, or if the separation follows a significant injury. A dark mark that does not grow out, bleeding, or separation without an obvious explanation also deserves examination. Arrange earlier review if you have diabetes, poor circulation, or reduced sensation.
