What should you know about TNBC and PD-L1?

PD-L1 is a protein that can be present on tumour cells or nearby immune cells. It may help a tumour avoid part of the immune response. A laboratory test on tumour tissue estimates whether PD-L1 is present according to a defined scoring method.

The result is not a simple label of healthy or unhealthy, and it does not predict one person’s outcome by itself. A positive result does not guarantee that immunotherapy will work, while a negative or low result does not answer every treatment question. The exact test, score, sample, and clinical setting matter.

Ask for the test name, score, specimen used, and the treatment setting to be explained in plain language. Confirm whether the sample was adequate and whether a new biopsy is needed. Your team may weigh PD-L1 with tumour stage, symptoms, other pathology, inherited gene findings, previous medicines, and your preferences.

Treatment may include chemotherapy, immunotherapy, or another approach. PARP inhibitor therapy may be considered when relevant gene and tumour information supports it. Never change cancer treatment based on a laboratory result without the prescribing team.

During treatment, report new or worsening cough, breathlessness, chest pain, diarrhoea, severe rash, yellowing of the skin, marked weakness, confusion, or changes in urination promptly. These symptoms can have different causes, but some immune-related effects need early assessment. Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, collapse, or sudden confusion.
