What should you know about TMRM flow cytometry?

TMRM is a fluorescent dye that responds to the electrical potential across a cell's mitochondrial membrane. In flow cytometry, cells pass through an instrument one at a time. The instrument records light signals from the dye and other markers, allowing laboratory staff to compare cell populations and identify patterns.

This is a specialised laboratory measurement, not a scan performed on your body. A result may be used in a research or diagnostic laboratory context depending on the sample and clinical question. It cannot be interpreted as a diagnosis on its own; sample handling, cell type, treatment exposure, and other laboratory findings affect its meaning.

Ask what sample was analysed, when it was collected, and whether any medicine or treatment exposure could affect the cells before testing. If the sample came from a bone marrow procedure, follow the procedure team's wound-care and activity instructions.

Request the report's plain-language interpretation and ask how it connects with blood counts, microscopy, genetic tests, or other flow-cytometry markers. Keep a record of the test date and the laboratory's conclusion. Do not change treatment based on a single technical value without your oncology or haematology team explaining its clinical role.

The flow-cytometry test itself is performed on a sample and should not cause symptoms. If the sample followed a bone marrow biopsy, contact the procedure team for increasing pain, bleeding, redness, drainage, or fever. Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, severe weakness, fainting, or difficulty breathing.

Ask what TMRM was measuring in your sample, whether the test is being used for diagnosis or treatment assessment, what comparison was used, and which other findings must be considered. Ask when the result will be available and whether it changes the next clinical step.
