What should you know about titanium plate and screws?

A plate sits along the bone and screws secure it on either side of a fracture or planned cut. The construct can restore alignment and reduce unwanted movement while new bone forms. Plates may be used after an injury, during an osteotomy, or as part of a fusion. Titanium is strong and generally well tolerated, but the implant does not replace bone healing; stability also depends on the bone, soft tissues and the load placed on the area.

Respect limits on weight bearing, lifting and range of motion, even when the incision feels comfortable. Keep dressings and the wound cared for as instructed, and use splints or walking aids correctly. Physiotherapy can maintain nearby joint movement and rebuild strength without stressing the repair. Attend imaging reviews and tell the surgeon about persistent rubbing, prominence, altered sensation or difficulty with the prescribed exercises.

Seek medical advice for increasing redness, warmth, drainage, fever, worsening swelling, new numbness, a pale or cold hand or foot, or pain that escalates after an initial improvement. After a fall, impact or sudden change in alignment, stop the activity and contact the team. Emergency help is needed for chest pain or breathing difficulty.

Ask whether the plate is expected to stay, how much stress the repair can take, and which movements could loosen or overload it. Clarify the imaging schedule, wound warning signs, rehabilitation milestones, and when work, driving, exercise or contact activity can be reviewed safely.
