Short answer

A Tissot spirometer is a device that measures the volume of air you breathe during lung function testing.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Purpose
Measures air volume during lung function testing.
Sample
Exhaled air through a mouthpiece.
Interpretation
Read with symptoms and clinical history.

What the test means

The device collects exhaled air so a clinician can assess measurements such as how much air your lungs hold and how readily you can move air out. A Tissot spirometer is associated with a water-sealed volume-measuring design; the exact equipment and instructions can vary between clinics. The result is interpreted alongside your symptoms, examination, medical history and other tests. It does not by itself name a condition.

How to prepare

Follow the clinic's instructions about meals, smoking, exercise and inhalers before the appointment. Wear comfortable clothing and tell the clinician if you are unwell, breathless at rest, or have chest pain. During testing, sit or stand as instructed, seal your lips around the mouthpiece, and follow the commands to breathe normally, inhale deeply or blow out firmly. Several attempts may be needed so the team can check that the readings are consistent.

When to seek care

Seek urgent medical help for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, blue or grey lips, fainting, confusion, or chest pain. Contact the testing service if coughing, dizziness or unusual breathlessness prevents you from completing the test. A clinician should review persistent symptoms such as wheezing, reduced exercise tolerance or a cough that does not settle, even if a spirometry reading is reassuring.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what each measurement represents, whether your result was reliable, how your medicines may have affected it, and whether you need repeat testing or another assessment.

Questions people ask

Is a Tissot spirometer the same as spirometry?

The spirometer is the measuring device; spirometry is the breathing test performed with a spirometer.

Can the test feel tiring?

Repeated deep breaths and forceful blowing can cause brief tiredness or light-headedness; tell the clinician if this happens.
