Short answer

Tiny kidney stones may pass without a procedure, but their position and symptoms determine whether monitoring or treatment is needed.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Assessment may include
Symptoms, urine tests, and imaging such as ultrasound

The short answer

Tiny kidney stones may pass without a procedure, but their position and symptoms determine whether monitoring or treatment is needed. A stone can cause no symptoms while in the kidney, then cause sharp flank or abdominal pain if it moves into the ureter.

What a tiny stone can mean

A small stone may irritate the urinary tract and cause waves of pain, nausea, blood in the urine, or Painful Urination. If it blocks urine flow, you may develop Difficulty Passing Urine. Dehydration can make urine more concentrated and may support stone formation, although the stone type and personal history also matter. An Abdominal Ultrasound or other assessment may show its location and whether the urinary system is dilated.

What you can do

Drink fluids regularly unless a clinician has told you to restrict them, and follow the plan given for pain relief. Do not force large amounts of fluid during severe pain or vomiting. If advised to collect a passed stone, use the supplied strainer so it can be examined. Arrange a GP Consultation when pain persists, symptoms recur, or you need help understanding an imaging result.

When to seek urgent care

Seek urgent care for severe or worsening pain, fever or chills with urinary symptoms, repeated vomiting, inability to pass urine, faintness, or feeling very unwell. A blocked urinary tract with infection needs prompt treatment. Emergency assessment is also appropriate when pain is sudden and unexplained, particularly if you cannot keep fluids down.

Questions for your doctor

Ask where the stone is, whether urine flow is blocked, how to manage pain, what fluid plan is suitable for you, whether the stone should be analysed, and which symptoms mean you need same-day care.

Questions people ask

Do tiny kidney stones always cause pain?

No. A stone may cause no symptoms while it remains in the kidney; pain can begin if it moves or obstructs urine flow.

Can I wait at home with a tiny stone?

Sometimes monitoring is suitable, but persistent pain, urinary difficulty, fever, vomiting, or uncertainty about the scan needs medical advice.
