What should you know about tinea versicolor turning red?

Tinea versicolor commonly changes how skin reflects colour and can appear lighter, darker, pink, or tan. Heat, sweating, rubbing, shaving, fragranced products, or scratching may make an affected area look redder for a while. Redness can also signal a different rash or an additional irritation, so colour alone cannot confirm the diagnosis.

Fine scale may be easier to see when the skin is dry. The condition itself is a superficial yeast overgrowth, not a sign that the skin is dirty.

Pause new fragranced products and avoid rubbing or scratching the area. Keep it cool and dry, wear loose clothing, and photograph the change in consistent lighting so you can describe its progression. Do not layer several medicated products or use a steroid without advice.
