Tinea Versicolor: Common Name and Meaning

The word versicolor refers to variation in colour. Pityriasis versicolor is another medical name for the same condition, not a separate disease. It develops in the outermost skin layer when a type of yeast grows more actively than usual. Patches may be pale, tan, pink, or brown and often have a delicate powdery scale. They commonly occur on the trunk, shoulders, neck, or upper arms. Itching can occur, particularly with heat and sweating, but many people notice the colour difference first.

A clinician can distinguish tinea versicolor from other causes of a rash or colour change. Treatment may be topical antifungal treatment for smaller areas, medicated shampoo treatment for wider areas, or oral antifungal treatment in selected cases. Use the chosen product according to its directions and avoid applying it to sensitive sites unless advised. Wash gently, dry the skin carefully, and change sweaty clothing. Even when treatment works, the affected pigment may take time to look like the surrounding skin.

Arrange an assessment if the patches are new and the diagnosis is unclear, or if they keep recurring after treatment. Get prompt care for a painful, hot, swollen, crusted, or oozing rash, especially with fever. Changes near the eyes or on mucosal skin should be assessed before using an antifungal product.
