Tinea Versicolor Before and After Treatment

Tinea versicolor can produce lighter, darker, pink, or tan patches on the trunk, shoulders, arms, or neck. Fine scale may be easier to notice when the skin is dry or gently rubbed. Some people have mild itch, while others notice only the colour difference. A clinician may confirm the pattern by examining the skin and scale. Photographs can be useful for comparison, but lighting and tanning can make before-and-after images misleading.

Use the recommended topical antifungal, medicated shampoo therapy, or oral antifungal treatment exactly as instructed. Do not add harsh scrubs, bleaching products, or tanning to make the patches blend. Keep the skin protected from excessive sun and moisturise if it feels dry. Improvement in scale and itch may come before pigment normalises. Continue monitoring the treated areas rather than repeating products early; a clinician can decide whether persistent patches represent slow colour recovery or ongoing infection.

Contact a clinician if the patches continue spreading, become painful or inflamed, develop blisters or discharge, or fail to respond to the advised treatment. Reassessment is helpful when the pattern keeps recurring or when the remaining marks have no scale and look unlike the original rash.
