What should you know about thyroid nodule TR5?

TR5 is the highest category in a thyroid ultrasound scoring system. The score reflects features such as the nodule's appearance, edges, shape, and internal characteristics. It describes what the scan shows; it does not identify the cells as benign or cancerous.

A clinician may recommend fine-needle aspiration to collect cells for laboratory examination. The result is considered alongside the scan, examination, medical history, and sometimes repeat imaging. Some nodules need monitoring rather than immediate treatment.

Arrange the recommended endocrine, radiology, or surgical review and take the ultrasound report with you. Ask whether sampling is advised, where it will be performed, and when results should be available. Do not stop thyroid medicine or supplements without guidance.

If a procedure is planned, ask about preparation, medicines that affect bleeding, and how the neck may feel afterwards. If cancer is found, treatment choices can include thyroid removal surgery followed by a tailored follow-up plan.

Seek urgent medical help for sudden difficulty breathing, inability to swallow saliva, or rapidly increasing neck swelling. Contact your care team promptly for new persistent hoarseness, worsening pressure in the neck, or a biopsy site that becomes increasingly red, painful, or starts draining.
