What should you know about thyroglobulin high after thyroidectomy?

Thyroglobulin is a protein made by thyroid cells. After thyroid removal, a detectable or raised result may come from thyroid tissue that remains after surgery, and in some people it can signal persistent or returning thyroid cancer. One result does not establish the cause. Doctors interpret the value with the type of surgery, timing of the test, treatment history, imaging and whether thyroglobulin antibodies are present.

Antibodies can interfere with how thyroglobulin is measured, so the antibody trend may be reviewed alongside the thyroglobulin trend. A result that changes over time may lead to repeat blood tests or imaging rather than an immediate conclusion.
