What should you know about thymoma type?

Short answer
Thymoma is a tumour arising from the thymus, and its type, extent and nearby involvement guide treatment planning.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What thymoma means
The thymus sits behind the breastbone and is part of the immune system. A thymoma may be found during imaging for another reason, or it may cause chest pressure, cough, breathlessness or difficulty swallowing when it presses on nearby structures. A tissue sample or the appearance on scans may help specialists describe its type. The report is interpreted together with the tumour's size, position and whether it has extended beyond the thymus.
Thymoma can also occur alongside immune-related conditions, including muscle weakness that affects the eyes, face, arms or breathing. This does not happen to everyone, but mentioning new weakness, drooping eyelids or swallowing changes can help the clinical team plan safely.
What to do next
Arrange a review with the specialist team who can examine the scans and pathology together. Ask whether the tumour appears confined to the thymus and whether more imaging or a biopsy is needed. Surgery may be considered when removal is feasible; learn more about [Tumour Removal Surgery](/treatments/surgical-oncology/tumour-removal-surgery/). Radiotherapy can be discussed after surgery or when local control needs additional treatment; see [Radiotherapy](/treatments/radiation-oncology/radiotherapy/). Keep a record of breathing, swallowing and muscle symptoms, and bring your medicines to appointments.
When to seek care
Seek urgent medical help for sudden or worsening difficulty breathing, inability to swallow saliva, fainting, new severe chest pain or rapidly worsening weakness. Contact your treating team promptly for persistent cough, increasing breathlessness, facial or neck swelling, or new double vision. These symptoms can have causes other than thymoma, but they need timely assessment.
Questions for your doctor
Which thymoma type is shown in my report? Is it limited to the thymus? Do I need a biopsy, further scans or lung-function checks? Is surgery suitable, and could radiotherapy be useful? How will you monitor for recurrence or immune-related symptoms?
Questions people ask
Is thymoma always symptomatic?
No. Some thymomas are discovered on imaging before they cause noticeable symptoms.
Can thymoma affect the immune system?
It can occur with immune-related problems, so report new muscle weakness, drooping eyelids or swallowing difficulty.
