Thumb pain when bending: what to know

Short answer
Thumb pain when bending can come from an irritated tendon, a thumb joint problem, or an injury, so the painful location and any swelling, clicking, or loss of movement help guide the next step.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What bending pain can tell you
Pain at the base of the thumb may be linked to the joint or nearby tendons, while pain near the middle or end joint may follow a local strain or joint irritation. Catching, clicking, or a thumb that locks can point to a tendon or joint movement problem. Pain along the thumb-side wrist can occur with De Quervain's Tenosynovitis. These patterns overlap, so bending pain alone cannot identify one condition.
Protect the movement
Avoid repeatedly bending the thumb to the point of pain, forceful pinching, and lifting with a wide thumb position. Use larger handles or both hands for tasks that strain the thumb. Keep the thumb gently moving within a comfortable range rather than holding it rigid for long periods. A wrapped cold pack may calm a recent flare; protect the skin and keep applications brief. Do not try to force a clicking or locked thumb straight. Arrange an assessment if the motion remains restricted or daily tasks are affected.
When to seek care
Have the thumb assessed for persistent bending pain, repeated locking, or swelling around a joint. Seek prompt care after a fall, twist, or impact if the thumb is crooked, bruised, very swollen, or difficult to move. Urgent attention is needed for numbness, marked weakness, a cold or discoloured finger, or rapidly worsening pain.
Questions for your doctor
Which joint or tendon is painful when I bend the thumb? Is the clicking or locking significant? Would a splint or hand therapy help, and what movement should I practise at home?

Questions people ask
Why does my thumb hurt only when I bend it?
A movement-specific symptom can occur when a tendon, joint surface, or healing tissue is loaded in that position. An examination is needed if it persists or limits function.
Should I keep bending a stiff thumb?
Gentle comfortable movement can help maintain function, but do not force a painful, clicking, or locked thumb. Seek advice for a tailored plan.
