Thumb finger swelling: what it may mean

Swelling soon after a knock or twist can accompany a sprain, bruise, or fracture. Puffiness around a nail may reflect local irritation or infection, especially with warmth, redness, or drainage. Swelling along the thumb side of the wrist can occur when tendon sheaths become irritated, as in De Quervain's Tenosynovitis. Stiffness at a knuckle may point toward joint irritation. Compare the affected thumb with the other hand and notice whether the swelling is local or spreading.

Tell a clinician about the start time, injury, new activity, insect bite, cut, manicure, fever, and any numbness. The appearance alone cannot identify the cause, and a hand examination may be needed.

Remove rings or tight items before swelling increases. Rest the thumb from heavy gripping, keep the hand comfortably raised, and apply a cool pack wrapped in cloth for short periods after a minor injury. Keep any wound clean and covered. Do not puncture, squeeze, or apply harsh chemicals to the swollen area. Use medicine only after checking that it is suitable for you with a pharmacist or clinician.

Get urgent help if the thumb is crooked, numb, cold, pale, blue, or impossible to move after an injury. Seek prompt assessment for rapidly spreading redness, pus, fever, red streaks, or swelling after an animal or human bite. A painful swollen thumb that interferes with grip should be examined, particularly if it is not improving. Do not wait if swelling is accompanied by severe pain or a tight, pressured feeling.
