What should you know about a three-ball spirometer?

Short answer

A three-ball spirometer is a simple breathing device used to practise slow, deep inhalations and watch airflow through its chambers.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Purpose
Practises slow, deep inhalation
Position
Use while sitting upright
Meaning
An airflow exercise, not a diagnosis

What the three balls show

The device usually has three chambers or indicators that respond as you breathe in. Moving the balls upward reflects the strength and speed of airflow at that moment; it is not a diagnosis and does not measure every aspect of lung function. A clinician may recommend it after an operation, during illness, or when shallow breathing is a concern. The aim is regular, comfortable expansion of the lungs, not forcing the balls upward.

How to use it

Sit upright, keep the device level, and seal your lips around the mouthpiece. Breathe out normally, then inhale slowly through the mouthpiece so the indicator rises. Hold the breath briefly if your clinician has advised this, then remove the mouthpiece and breathe out gently. Rest between attempts if you feel light-headed, and follow the frequency and target set for you. Clean and store the device as instructed.

When to seek care

Stop and seek urgent medical help for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, fainting, new confusion, or chest pain that does not settle. Contact a clinician promptly if breathing becomes harder, fever develops, you cough up blood, or you cannot use the device because of pain or worsening symptoms.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what target movement is suitable for you, how often to practise, whether pain relief or a different position would help, and when your breathing should be reassessed.

Questions people ask

Is a three-ball spirometer the same as spirometry?

No. A three-ball device supports breathing practice, while spirometry is a lung-function test performed with measuring equipment.

What if I feel dizzy while using it?

Stop, breathe normally, and rest. Tell your clinician if dizziness returns or is accompanied by breathlessness or chest discomfort.
