How thoracic outlet syndrome is tested

Short answer

A thoracic outlet syndrome assessment combines your symptom history, physical examination, and selected tests because no single test confirms every type.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Assessment
History and examination help determine whether nerves, veins, or arteries may be involved.
Test choice
The suspected structure and competing diagnoses guide investigations.

What testing can show

A clinician may ask how symptoms change with posture, arm position, lifting, or repetitive work. They may check neck and shoulder movement, strength, sensation, pulses, skin colour, and swelling in both arms. Imaging can look at bones, the neck, and the space around vessels. Ultrasound or other blood-flow studies may help when a vein or artery is suspected; nerve tests may help assess competing causes of tingling or weakness. A positive position-based manoeuvre alone does not establish the diagnosis because similar changes can occur in people without the syndrome.

How to prepare

Before the appointment, record which fingers feel numb, what movements reproduce symptoms, and whether rest changes them. Bring a list of medicines and previous neck, shoulder, or arm injuries. Do not deliberately push through pain to reproduce symptoms. Your clinician may recommend Physiotherapy or Postural Correction Therapy after considering the examination and test findings. For background, see Thoracic Outlet Syndrome, Arm Numbness and Tingling, or Hand Numbness.

When testing should not wait

Seek urgent care for a suddenly cold, pale, blue, swollen, or very painful arm; rapidly worsening weakness; chest pain; or breathlessness. These signs may reflect an acute blood-flow or breathing problem. Testing for a chronic nerve pattern can be arranged routinely only when symptoms are stable and no urgent warning sign is present.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which form of thoracic outlet syndrome is being considered, what each proposed test can and cannot show, and whether a neck or shoulder condition could mimic it. Ask when results will be reviewed and which symptoms should prompt earlier contact.

Questions people ask

Can one test diagnose thoracic outlet syndrome?

Usually no. Diagnosis depends on the pattern of symptoms, examination findings, and appropriate supporting tests.

Will a scan show the cause of arm tingling?

It may help, but tingling can arise from several areas, so the scan must be interpreted alongside your examination.
