Things to Do for Shin Splints

Short answer
For shin splints, reduce painful impact, use comfortable low-load movement, check footwear and training changes, then rebuild activity gradually as Shin Pain settles.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- First change
- Reduce the impact activity that reproduces pain.
- Return plan
- Rebuild distance, speed, hills, and surfaces gradually, one change at a time.
What shin splints involve
Shin splints, also called medial tibial stress syndrome, commonly cause aching or tenderness along the inner edge of the shin after a rise in running, jumping, hills, or hard surfaces. Tight calf muscles, a sudden training change, and foot mechanics can increase load through the lower leg.
Flat Feet may influence how force travels through the leg, but shin pain can have other causes. Pain in one small spot, pain at rest or at night, marked swelling, or pain that worsens with hopping needs assessment for a possible bone stress injury.
Steps that can help
Pause running and jumping that reproduce symptoms, and choose a comfortable alternative such as easy cycling or swimming if it does not hurt. Ice wrapped in cloth may soothe symptoms after activity. Check whether recent changes in distance, speed, hills, shoes, or surface happened before the pain began.
Return with short, easy sessions on a forgiving surface, leaving rest between impact sessions. Increase one training feature at a time and stop if pain becomes sharper, changes your gait, or lingers into ordinary walking. Physiotherapy can assess strength, mobility, and running technique; Gait Retraining or Custom Orthotics may be considered when assessment supports them.
When to seek care
Arrange an examination if pain is pinpointed, severe, present at rest, associated with swelling, or not improving after reducing impact. Seek urgent care for inability to bear weight, sudden major swelling, numbness, a cold or pale foot, or severe pain after an injury.
Questions for your doctor
Does my pain fit shin splints, or should a bone stress injury be excluded? Which activities can I continue? Would Physiotherapy, Gait Retraining, or Custom Orthotics suit my movement pattern?

Questions people ask
Can I keep running with shin splints?
Running through worsening or gait-changing pain can prolong irritation; use comfortable low-load activity and return gradually after symptoms settle.
Are special insoles needed?
Custom Orthotics are not necessary for everyone; an assessment can show whether foot mechanics are contributing and whether they are appropriate.
