What should you know about thin white line nails?

A narrow white mark may appear after picking, filing, manicures, repeated wet work, or a knock that affected the nail near its growth area. The mark usually moves towards the fingertip as the nail grows. Lines on several nails, a rough or crumbly surface, thickening, lifting, or colour change can point to a nail disorder such as Nail Fungus or Nail Psoriasis. The appearance alone cannot confirm the cause.

Keep nails trimmed, avoid scraping beneath them, and use gloves for prolonged contact with water or cleaning products. Pause aggressive buffing and artificial nail applications while the change is being watched. Take a clear photograph and note whether the line moves with growth, remains fixed, or appears on other nails. A clinician can examine the nail and may take a sample before recommending treatment; oral antifungal medicine is not appropriate for every white nail.

Arrange a dermatology review if a line stays in the same place, widens, affects several nails, or comes with pain, swelling, bleeding, lifting, or a dark streak. Seek prompt care for redness spreading around the nail, pus, or fever. These features need examination because infection, inflammation, and other nail conditions require different care.

Ask whether the mark is growing out with the nail, whether testing is needed, and which products or habits could be irritating it. You can also ask how Nail Fungus, Nail Psoriasis, or another nail condition would be distinguished on examination.
