Short answer

Thin brittle nails often improve with protection from water and chemicals, while persistent changes need assessment for infection, skin disease, or another cause.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why nails split or peel

Repeated wetting and drying, detergents, solvents, nail polish remover, filing, picking, biting, and artificial nail removal can separate the nail layers. Eczema, psoriasis, thyroid problems, iron deficiency, medicines, and ageing can also alter nail strength. A fungal nail infection may cause thickening, discoloration, crumbling, or separation, although not every discolored or brittle nail is fungal.

A clinician examines the nail plate, surrounding skin, and other nails. If Nail Fungus is suspected, testing may be considered before treatment because several nail conditions look alike.

Protecting fragile nails

Keep nails short and file rough edges in one direction. Wear gloves for cleaning and prolonged water exposure, dry hands carefully, and apply a bland moisturiser to nails and cuticles after washing. Avoid cutting cuticles, scraping under the nail, or using nails as tools. Pause extensions and harsh removers while the nail grows out.

Do not use leftover antifungal or steroid products without advice. Nail growth is gradual, so improvement is judged by healthy nail emerging from the base rather than by the older damaged edge.

When to seek care

Book an assessment for persistent splitting, several affected nails, pain, swelling, drainage, marked color change, or separation from the nail bed. Seek prompt care for redness spreading beyond the nail fold, severe throbbing pain, or a dark streak that is new or changing.

Questions for your doctor

Does the appearance suggest trauma, eczema, psoriasis, or Nail Fungus? Do I need a nail sample or blood tests? Which moisturiser, treatment, or nail products are safe, and what should I avoid while the nail grows?

Questions people ask

Is every brittle nail a fungal infection?

No. Trauma, product exposure, inflammatory skin conditions, and health problems can also change nail texture and color.

Should I remove my artificial nails?

Ask a clinician or nail professional about safe removal; forceful peeling can strip the nail surface and worsen fragility.
