Short answer

VBAC means planning a vaginal birth after a previous caesarean, with suitability assessed from your scar, pregnancy, and birth history.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Understanding VBAC

A previous caesarean does not automatically decide how your next baby must be born. Your maternity team considers the type of uterine incision, reason for the earlier operation, number of previous births, current pregnancy, placenta position, and your preferences. The visible skin scar does not show the uterine incision, so the operative record can be useful.

VBAC labour needs a setting where maternal and baby wellbeing can be monitored and urgent surgical care is available if plans change. A planned Caesarean Section is an alternative that should be discussed alongside the benefits and drawbacks of each route.

Preparing for a birth discussion

Ask your maternity team to review your previous notes early in pregnancy. Discuss how labour would be monitored, what happens if labour does not start, and which induction methods are suitable. Make a written birth preference plan while allowing for changes based on examinations, symptoms, or the baby’s condition. Tell the team about previous uterine surgery or complications.

When to seek urgent assessment

During pregnancy or labour, seek urgent maternity advice for heavy bleeding, persistent severe abdominal pain, fainting, reduced fetal movements, or contractions with concerning symptoms. Call the maternity unit when labour begins according to its instructions. Do not wait for a routine appointment if pain is sudden, constant, or feels different from normal contractions.

Questions for your doctor

Ask how your previous uterine incision affects planning, whether induction is appropriate, how the baby will be monitored, what signs would change the plan, and how emergency care would be organised.

Questions people ask

Does a previous caesarean rule out VBAC?

Not automatically. The uterine incision and details of the current pregnancy need individual review.

Can the birth plan change during labour?

Yes. Changes may be recommended if maternal or baby wellbeing, labour progress, or symptoms become concerning.
