What should you know about TFCC sprain?

Short answer

A TFCC sprain is an overstretch or injury of wrist-supporting tissue that can cause pain with gripping, rotation or pressure through the hand.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What a sprain involves

The triangular fibrocartilage complex supports the wrist on the little-finger side and helps control forearm rotation. A sprain can follow a fall, a sudden twist, or repeated loading. Pain may be local, with tenderness, swelling, clicking or reduced grip. A mild sprain may settle as the tissue is protected, while a more substantial injury can affect stability and take longer to recover. Because wrist fractures and tendon problems can look similar, persistent symptoms should be examined.

Caring for the wrist

For an early flare, reduce painful gripping, lifting and twisting and use the hand for light tasks only. A splint may support the wrist while symptoms calm. Physiotherapy can later help restore comfortable movement, forearm control and strength. Kinesiology taping may provide additional sensory support for some people, but it should not be used to push through pain or replace assessment. Increase activity gradually, using symptom response during and after activity as a guide.

When to seek care

Get prompt assessment after trauma if there is a deformity, major swelling, inability to move the fingers, or severe pain. Numbness, a cold hand, or pale or blue fingers requires urgent care. Make a routine appointment when pain or clicking continues, the wrist feels unstable, or normal tasks remain difficult after a period of protection.

Questions to ask

Ask whether the injury appears mild or unstable, how long support should be used, and which movements are safe. Ask when to begin strengthening, whether taping could help your activities, and what symptoms would require reassessment.

Questions people ask

Is a TFCC sprain the same as a tear?

A sprain can range from overstretching to partial tissue damage; only an assessment can clarify the extent.

Can taping support a sprained wrist?

Kinesiology taping may offer support or movement awareness for some people, but it should complement protection and rehabilitation.
