What are the effects of the tetanus vaccine?

The injection presents an inactivated form of tetanus toxin to the immune system. This helps the body prepare antibodies and memory cells for future exposure; it cannot cause tetanus. The arm may feel tender, warm or swollen for a short time. Some people also feel tired, develop a mild fever or notice a headache after vaccination.

These reactions are generally temporary. They do not mean that tetanus has developed, and having no reaction does not mean the vaccine has failed. Combination vaccines can produce effects related to their other components as well.

Rest if you feel tired, drink fluids and keep the injection area comfortable. Follow the label or a clinician’s advice before taking a medicine for pain or fever, particularly if you have another medical condition or take regular medicines. Contact a clinician if a reaction is worsening, unusually intense or not settling as expected. Seek emergency help for trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, widespread hives, fainting that does not quickly resolve or severe weakness after the injection. These can be signs of a serious allergic reaction or another urgent problem.

Ask which reactions are expected with your vaccine, how to manage arm discomfort, and what symptoms should prompt urgent help. Tell the vaccinator about any previous severe reaction, allergies, pregnancy or immune-system treatment before the dose.
