Tetanus vaccin: what you should know

Tetanus vaccination trains the immune system to recognise and neutralise the toxin linked with tetanus. It does not remove dirt, dead tissue, or bacteria from a wound, and it cannot replace treatment for someone who already has symptoms. Protection is built and maintained through a recommended vaccination schedule, with later doses reviewed according to age, previous records, and local guidance.

Clean the injury with running water, remove only loose visible dirt, and cover it with a clean dressing. Contact a healthcare professional promptly for a puncture, deep or dirty wound, burn, crush injury, or animal bite, particularly when vaccination records are missing. The clinician will compare the wound with your immunisation history and decide whether a vaccine dose or additional immune protection is needed.

Seek emergency care for jaw stiffness, painful muscle spasms, trouble swallowing, or any change in breathing. These symptoms need assessment for tetanus and other urgent conditions; do not wait for a vaccine appointment. Get prompt wound care for spreading redness, increasing pain, pus, fever, numbness, or loss of movement.

Ask which tetanus doses are recorded, whether your wound changes the recommendation, and whether another form of immune protection is needed. Ask about expected injection-site reactions and the date for any follow-up dose.
