What should you know about tetanus timeline?

Tetanus is caused by a toxin made by Clostridium tetani, a bacterium that can enter through a puncture, wound, burn, or damaged skin. The toxin affects nerves and muscles. Symptoms can begin after the wound has started to heal, and the timing is not reliable enough to use as a safety test.

Early features may include jaw stiffness, difficulty swallowing, neck tightness, painful muscle stiffness, or spasms. Tetanus does not spread from person to person. A clean-looking wound can still need a professional review if vaccination history is incomplete or uncertain.

Rinse the wound with clean running water, remove visible dirt only if it comes away easily, and cover it with a clean dressing. Do not seal a deep puncture or heavily contaminated wound at home. Arrange medical advice promptly, especially after a soil-contaminated injury, animal bite, burn, crush injury, or wound containing a foreign object.

A clinician will assess the wound and check your vaccination record. Depending on the injury and previous doses, you may need a tetanus-containing vaccine and, for some higher-risk situations, additional protection. Antibiotics do not replace vaccination or wound treatment for preventing tetanus.

Seek emergency care immediately for jaw locking, trouble swallowing or breathing, severe muscle stiffness, repeated spasms, or rapidly worsening symptoms. These can affect the muscles needed for breathing and require hospital treatment.

Seek same-day wound assessment for a deep, dirty, puncture, bite, burn, or crush wound, or whenever your tetanus vaccination history is unknown. Do not wait for symptoms to appear before asking about protection.
