Where is the tetanus shot given?

A healthcare professional checks your history, selects an appropriate injection site, and gives the vaccine into muscle tissue. The upper arm is commonly used for adolescents and adults. A young child may receive an injection in a different muscle chosen for their size and age. Soreness, warmth, redness, or swelling around the site can occur for a short time. These local effects are different from signs of tetanus, which include jaw stiffness and muscle spasms.

Keep the area clean and move the arm gently if it feels stiff. Follow the advice given by the vaccinator about comfort measures and observation. Tell them before vaccination if you have had a serious reaction to a previous dose, a bleeding problem, or a condition affecting your immune system. If the shot follows a wound, care for the wound separately because vaccination does not remove dirt or repair injured tissue.

Seek emergency help for difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, fainting that does not resolve, or widespread hives after vaccination. Contact a clinician for severe or worsening arm pain, marked swelling, persistent fever, or a wound that becomes red, hot, swollen, or drains pus. Urgent care is needed for jaw stiffness, swallowing difficulty, or muscle spasms after an injury.
