What a tetanus shot is used for

Tetanus bacteria can enter through a puncture, cut, burn, bite, crush injury, or wound contaminated with soil or debris. The infection can cause painful muscle tightening and difficulty opening the mouth or swallowing. Vaccination prepares the immune system to recognise tetanus toxin. A shot supports prevention; it does not replace cleaning a wound or treating an established infection.

Rinse the wound with clean running water, remove visible dirt gently, control bleeding with pressure, and cover it. Contact a healthcare professional promptly if the wound is deep, dirty, punctured, badly crushed, or your vaccination history is unclear.
