What does a tetanus shot mean?

Tetanus is a serious illness caused when bacteria entering damaged skin produce a toxin. Vaccination does not mean that a person has tetanus; it is a preventive measure. A clinician may review vaccination after a wound because protection depends on the type of injury and the person’s previous doses. The vaccine is not a substitute for removing dirt, checking damaged tissue, or treating an established infection.

For a wound, wash your hands, rinse the area with clean running water, apply gentle pressure to bleeding, and cover it with a clean dressing. Contact a healthcare professional if the wound is deep, contaminated, caused by a puncture or bite, or your vaccination history is uncertain. Bring any paper or digital record so the clinician can make a safer decision about the next dose.

Emergency assessment is needed for trouble breathing, severe bleeding, loss of function, or an object stuck in the wound. Seek immediate help for jaw stiffness, difficulty swallowing, painful muscle contractions, or unusual body rigidity, because these can occur with tetanus. Increasing redness, warmth, pus, fever, or worsening pain also deserves prompt review for a wound infection.
